Altitude (0 comments)
11/20/2009

Being from sea level, I never gave much thought to hunting at a higher altitude. Well, reality set in last week in Wyoming as we were hunting at seventy-five-hundred feet above sea level. The hunt was for coyotes and would cross three states. You know all about it if you read my last blog. In preperation for the hunt I was walking a mile every day for weeks to get into shape. Little did I know that the air was so thin my mile walk would mean nothing in the long run. Building up a sweat from my walk was out of the question. I would find myself gasping for breath way before that happened.  However the motivation from seeing and harvesting coyotes did help. If your planning to hunt at a higher altitude you might want to double or triple your expected workout. Now that I know what it's like things will be different next year. Are you hunting or planning to hunt at a higher altitude? Send me an email and let me know.

Three States In Three Days (0 comments)

From left to right Brent Rueb , Brian Downs, Bob Nemnich, Geoff Nemnich

We had a plan and we stuck to it. The group consisted of Geoff and Bob Nemnich, Brent Rueb and myself. The states were Colorado, Nebraska and Wyoming. Our plan was to take a coyote in each state and capture it on film. However, the wind didn't get the memo as it blew from twenty to a deafening forty-five miles-per-hour at times. When it did calm for short periods the howling I heard was amazing. Geoff ran the show and he is as hardcore as they come when it involves predator hunting. It wasn't all business though, as we managed to have some fun and joked around a lot. The fun and laughter helped drown out the aching in my boots as Geoff told me time and time again. "We're just going to sneak over this hill and set up," Geoff would always comment.

Never trust a Nebraskan who says it's right over the next hill. You're probably going to walk a mile or more. I have to laugh now that I'm back home and the next hill is only a couple of hundred yards away. I couldn't have had more fun hunting coyotes with a great group of knowledgeable guys. I managed to get my triple state slam and Geoff got great film of it. I am happy to say that I will be on his next video Coyote Craze Vol. 2. In the mean time you can check out Coyote craze Vol. 1'"Dead in Their Tracks".

Honey Hole (0 comments)
11/8/2009

Where I am on the East Coast there are limited areas to hunt—most of it being public property. When you find yourself a "Honey Hole" that is loaded with predators you might just want to keep it to yourself. What's that old adage? Two men can keep a secret if one of them is dead. People talk and that's the bottom line. Most of the time it's not meant to be harmful. If a buddy of yours saw a friend who coyote hunts he might say, you should see the monster coyote that Frank shot down off Sam Turner Road. From there it's a ripple effect. He tells a buddy who tells a guy at the gun shop and so on.  All of a sudden you see boot tracks everywhere and no coyote tracks. This has happened to me at several of my favorite spots. I enjoy the camaraderie of the hunt and sharing stories and pictures with friends. But when it comes to the exact locations of my hunting spots. You're just not going to get it out of me. Are any of you the same way? Shoot me an email and let me know your experiences.

Coyote Attack (0 comments)
11/6/2009

I was both saddened and surprised to hear that coyotes attacked and killed a 19-year-old woman in Canada last week. She was hiking when a pair of coyotes brought her to the ground and mauled her. She later died of those injuries after being Med-flighted to a nearby hospital. The area where this attack took place was closed to hunting. Could this have been avoided if hunting was allowed? How is it that these coyotes have no fear of humans to the point that we are considered food. Wildlife officials are currently trying to hunt down the other coyote involved in the incident. Introducing hunting into this area may prevent a tragedy like this one from ever happening again. Sadly I'm sure they will say it's an isolated incident and it will never happen again. Tell that to the family of Taylor Mitchell, the young girl whose life was cut short.

Wolf Hunting (0 comments)
10/31/2009

While I am sure you or someone you know has tried there hand at hunting the recent wolf season in Idaho or Montana I have gone a different route. I made the decision to hunt the Grey Wolf in Canada with none other than Kapriver Outfitters. When I first learned of the negative forty degree temperatures that are not uncommon in Kapuskasing I was a little hesitent. You only live once and life is about adventure so I'm going temps be damned. Kap has been host to hunters like Terry Denmon of Mojo Outdoors TV and writers from right here at Predator Xtreme. You can hunt the wolves on your own terms. However you choose to hunt them the guide will accommodate you. I really liked that about Peter. He understands that hunters don't all want the same thing from the experience. Predator hunters especially can be very picky about how they hunt. The price was great and the guide came with glowing references including a few I tracked down on my own. I'm booked for February and can't wait to blog more about my wolf adventures in the North.
