A teenage hunter from Concrete, Wash. shot and killed a hiker last August that he mistook for a bear on the Sauk mountain hiking trail north of Seattle.

Tyler J. Kales , then 14, now 15, has been sentenced to 30 days in juvenile detention and 120 hours of community service, according to The Associated Press.

Kales and his older brother were hunting together. Pamela Almli, 54, of Oso was hiking along the trail when she was shot.

Kales apologized to the victim's family at last Friday's sentencing and said he hoped they could forgive him.

Gail Blacker, the victim’s sister, told Kales, “In one second, you destroyed everything.”

Kales was convicted last month of second-degree manslaughter with a firearm by Susan Cook, Skagit County superior court judge. She also sentenced him to a year of probation and four hours of hunting safety education as community service.
