A man from Boise, Idaho was brutally attacked by a grizzly bear during a hike through Gallatin National Forest outside of West Yellowstone, Mont. on Tuesday, June 9.

Paul Sellers, 35, suffered from a broken arm, a punctured lung, a broken rib, a bite on the back of his head and abrasions, but is alive because he managed to stay calm during the attack.

"After the bear left, he lay there for a few moments (and) found his arm behind his head—he thought it had been ripped off," said his wife, Miriam, to the Idaho Statesman.

Sellers walked on the trails for two hours before he found forest rangers.

Gallatin National Forest spokeswoman Marna Daley said Sellers surprised the grizzly bear mother and her cubs. Sellers had bear repellent, but was unable to use it during the attack.

Sellers is recovering at a Rexburg hospital from his injuries.
