Mississippi held its second controlled alligator private lands hunt with Warren County hunters leading pack. Hunters killed 24 of the 59 taken overall in the state. A 12-foot, 9-inch alligator, the largest of the season for 13 participating Mississippi counties, was also killed in Warren County.
Issaquena County was the second leading county in alligator kills with 19 taken. Five alligators were taken in Claiborne County.
Ricky Flynt, program coordinator for the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks, said 101 permits were issued for the private land hunt. Fifteen permit holders did not hunt because of wet weather; twelve others did not bag a gator at all.
"We had the wettest October and September on record and that hampered some people's hunting opportunities due to either high water or restricted accesses,'' Flynt said. "Even though the harvest was fairly good, it would have been better had the weather been better.''
On average, alligator harvests measured 7-feet, 5-inches.
Flynt said the third alligator season would likely be opened to even more counties.
